about

Ain't Betty consists of songwriters Meleva Steiert and Graham Sobelman. Their album was recorded at Synthesis Music Studios, in Northern California. The band sought out the help of producer Brent Chancellor to assist in the recording of the project. He and Sobelman produced the album and wrote the string arrangements, while Chancellor engineered the tracks. The duo has collected musicians from various projects over the years, and this recording boasts the talents of a stylistically diverse group: jazz bassist Bill Douglass (Tom Waits, Marian MacPartland),” composer/guitarist Taehun Lee and string players Charles Spruill, IV (Violin), Elyssa Lefurgey-Smith (Violin), Holly Harrison (Viola), Timothy Stanley (Cello). Jared Gardner plays bass on “Hyperballad.” Chancellor provides the subtle percussion throughout.

Setting out to create an album that boasts the intimacy of their live performances, the recording rarely utilizes any studio wizardry and exclusively uses acoustic instruments to generate their unique sound.

Their songs have an intimate and haunting quality:
"Complicated Beast" is a wrenching tragedy, while "Gettin’ Married" has an honest and joyous reverence in its delivery. The dissonance of the song, "Bargain Day," is balanced by the sheer prettiness of songs like "Back to You" and "Still Young." There’s a clear nod to more traditional Americana in the melodies of songs like “House of Cards” and “Indigo Child.” The lyrics, both plain and poignant, have a modern story-telling quality: “Grinning Jacks and Queens of Mona Lisa mock me to the floor.”
